I have learned a lot by teaching. Teaching informs my research methods (and vice versa). My pedagogical style has three broad aims. First, I seek to facilitate a discussion that is focused on a close reading of the texts assigned for the class. Second, I aim to create a democratic discussion in which many students feel comfortable speaking. I try to do this by connecting abstract debates to contemporaneous practical issues that students have interests in and opinions about already. This is related to my third aim: showing students that theory and doctrine are deeply intertwined and inextricably linked.
